Protecting Turbine Blades: Werover's Edge in Lightning-Aware Maintenance

Tamara Weber
Overview
Werover develops advanced monitoring systems for offshore and onshore wind turbines, with a special focus on blade health diagnostics. As wind energy scales rapidly across Europe and MENA, turbine components face growing exposure to extreme weather—particularly lightning strikes that can damage blades, disrupt power generation, and require expensive interventions.
Challenge
Despite continuous sensor data and SCADA-based health tracking, lightning-related damage remained a persistent challenge—especially in high-risk regions such as the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts. Werover needed earlier warning signals to prevent blade damage and reduce unplanned maintenance.
Key focus included:
Early detection of lightning-related blade damages provides actionable insights for maintenance teams
Integration now makes it easier to track when and where lightning-related damages occur, improving traceability for engineers and insurance purposes
Existing systems were reactive and Werover sought a more predictive solution that could integrate seamlessly with their turbine analytics.
How AI Powers Lightning-Aware Maintenance
1. Lightning Probability Forecasts with Hourly Resolution
WeatherX delivers short-term probabilistic lightning forecasts with REFRESH-10M forecasting model, allowing Werover to flag risk zones up to 3 hours in advance—ideal for adjusting rotation strategy or pausing sensitive operations.
2. Spatially Precise Strike Risk Maps
Customized gridded risk layers help localize strike probability per turbine cluster, factoring in topography, altitude, and storm system velocity. This enables proactive inspection prioritization.
3. Sensor-Integrated Alert Calibration
Werover’s existing blade vibration and current sensors are now connected to WeatherX’s forecast thresholds, enabling a smarter alert system that combines environmental prediction with on-site diagnostics.
4. Historical Strike Pattern Analysis
Using multi-year lightning databases, WeatherX identifies hotspots and storm system behaviors that historically correlate with high strike frequency—improving long-term siting and design.
Operational Impact
Following integration with WeatherX:
Integration with Werover’s system provides early detection and better tracking of lightning-related damages
Engineers now receive clearer insights into lightning-related damage for more informed maintenance planning
Automated risk tiering per turbine reduces manual triage for field teams
Improved traceability also supports better justification for insurance processes
By predicting risks early, businesses can proactively adjust their customers' maintenance schedules, ensuring smoother operations even in times of crisis.
Looking Ahead
Werover now plans to embed WeatherX's new REFRESH-10M nowcasting model deeper into its O&M dashboards and expand to cover ice accumulation, hailstorm, and high-shear wind risks. The goal is full-spectrum weather intelligence, embedded directly into turbine health analytics—for next-gen asset level resilience.
